Welcome to another edition of “Confessions of a Cosplayer”. Each week I will feature a cosplayer in the Friday franchise who I either know personally or through social media. As time moves on, I will also be focusing on other iconic horror characters from other franchises than I will have horror inspired cosplayers. If you are a cosplayer or know someone who is a cosplayer and would like to be featured on a weekly spotlight please send an email to SouthJerseyJason@gmail.com
This week we are featuring a representation of the franchise that did not receive fan appreciation when the movie first came out but over the years, this installment has gained its own cult following. As you have probably guessed by now, we are talking about the character of the imposter Jason from Friday the 13th Pt.5: A New Beginning. The imposter Jason is revealed to be Roy Burns, the father of the poor soul Joey, who just wanted to help Vic chop wood. Unfortunately, Joey received the chopping end of the axe from Vic. I have not seen too many individuals cosplay as Roy Burns, so I was very excited to hear from Jonathan.
What is your first memory of watching a Friday the 13th movie?
My very first Friday the 13th film as I recall was Freddy vs Jason. It was a film I enjoyed when I was a kid or close to a teenager.
What is your favorite Friday the 13th movie?
My favorite movie would have to be Friday the 13th Pt. 5: A new Beginning. I just loved the concept. I can see where they messed up and should have fixed it but yeah it’s something if given a chance people would love.
What made you get into the art of cosplaying (how old were you? Where did you first show off your cosplay, do you design your own clothing, hood, hockey mask etc.? If not, who do you use to help with your costume?
Originally, I was creating a Power Ranger Costume but it didn’t go as planned so I turned it into a Spider-Man Costume and went to my very first comic-con. This would have been about 3 years ago around 2017. Now if we are talking about the whole Jason stuff, well this is an interesting story and hope people don’t take it personal but I tend to be a bit honest. The Friday the 13th game had come out and I really enjoyed it as I had played the very first Friday game for the NES and never thought anyone would create a new game. Then about a couple months into the game, Roy gets mentioned. I thought the concept of this new Jason was epic but for some reason the fans were so hateful and against it. I decided that I wanted to know why people hated the character so much and even watched the movie.
Not to bring personal matters but if I could be real, I could understand this random hatred as it was familiar because of bullying and such when I was younger. I told myself that while everyone hated the character, I would love the character. After watching the movie and understanding things, I decided to create a costume for Roy. At first it was to get it over with but then I wanted to get the most accurate costume.
As fan I felt that artists didn’t really respect the mask or the character, so they just did whatever with it. (That is not to say that I am dissing or don’t even like a lot of other artist’s part 5’s.) I just wanted to put respect and such for the character that I went and did tons of research for said mask and costume.
I did months even years and still presently doing research on the mask and costume. I learned about how the original team gave us the colors they used and even learned that one of the actors had finally told us the colors of the coveralls.
All that passion became a thing and I even bought things to vacuum form; paint and weather masks, costumes and even repaint props. While I do sell mask here and there, most of this was just for personal projects and passion for the character of Roy Burns. Sadly, I don’t design my own clothes. I buy clothing and then I weather and paint them to look dirty, damaged etc. I tend to do everything myself, by looking up ideas on YouTube and even asking artists for tips and feedback.
How many versions of Jason costumes do you have? Do you have plans to showcase more costumes?
I currently have 2 versions. I have Roy Burns aka The Jason Imposter and a custom Jason I am working on currently but I do plan on making more custom Jason’s and Roy’s in the near future.
Do you attend conventions? If so which ones do you attend? Are there any you recommend for someone who has never attended? What advice would you give to someone who has never attended a convention as a cosplayer?
Yes. I have attended a few cons so far. I have attended a couple here in my city which were free. One was in our cities library while another was called Cyber-Con. Those where my very first cons in 2017 but since then I’ve gone to paid ones as well. Salt City Comic-Con in Syracuse NY in 2018, then Keystone ComiCon in 2019 where I got to meet Jules Valenti from Friday the 13th: Vengeance.
Another con I’ve gone to is Lehigh Valley ComiCon which is the con I’ve been to the most and currently trying to head to Monster Mania in March. I recommend going to local ones first and then work your way up from there to cons farther. The interactions with fans have been quite interesting. Just be mindful and respectful with fans and other cosplayers.
I would recommend having fun and bringing some cash. If you don’t you will regret it. I would also recommend cosplay, it’s even more exciting when you dress up as a specific or original character and people will definitely take notice.
What advice would you give to a first time cosplayer?
I would say go out and cosplay whoever you want. It feels even better when you can create your own costume from scratch or even semi-scratch. People will appreciate your hard work and definitely look up tutorials.
Anyone can buy a costume but there is this amazing accomplishment when you can create your own, plus the costume contest are there for that reason to challenge you to create and show off your passion.
Who are some of your favorite cosplayers that you follow on social media or personally know?
While that list is long, I have a few I can name. A buddy of mine named James Burlew aka @NY_Hack_n_Slash on IG. He cosplays and models Pre-Uber Jason from Jason X. Jordan Harvey aka @harvey.cos on IG who does 2009’s Reboot Jason. Another buddy of mine James Shaver who does the Vengeance Jason and @the.shape.kills on IG who does a killer Michael Myers just to name a few.
Do you have any social media accounts for your cosplay that you would like to promote?
Well my page is a hybrid page, for both my mask business and my cosplays. If anyone would be interested it’s @factor13thstudios on Instagram.
