Welcome to Crystal Lake

Confessions of a Cosplayer: James Burlew

Welcome to another installment of “Confessions of a Cosplayer”. Each week I will feature a cosplayer in the Friday franchise who I either know personally or through social media. As time moves on, I will also be focusing on other iconic horror characters from other franchises then I will have horror inspired cosplayers.
If you are a cosplayer or know someone who is a cosplayer and would like to be featured on a weekly spotlight please reach out to me on Facebook, Instagram or send me an email at SouthJerseyJason@gmail.com

On this week’s edition, I am introducing the final member of the 13 Gallow family. If you follow Gallow Goes to Hell on Facebook or 13_Gallows_Lane on Instagram you should be familiar with this cosplayer as he takes on the style of Jason X. If you are not familiar with the movie, New Line decided to take Jason from his home of Camp Crystal Lake to not only 400 years into the future but also into space. Jason in space!? By this time the franchise had really jumped the shark but it was not the first horror movie to take its antagonist from their familiar setting and it wont be the last. Jason X served as a holdover for the forthcoming Freddy vs Jason and sadly (to some) would be Kane Hodder’s last time donning the hockey mask.
I met James through social media this past summer. He followed my page and he would share his work on his pre-Uber costume with me . I have to say Jame’s pre-Uber Jason is fantastic. James teamed up with Joe Gallow and once Joe’s vision came to realization, you would think the photo’s taken were deleted scenes from the movie, thats how great they look! I am looking forward to meeting James in person this weekend at Monster Mania as well as hanging out with him and the rest of the Gallow Legion when we go to Blairstown in May for the 40th anniversary of the original film’s release.

What is your first memory of watching a Friday the 13th movie?
Watching Friday the 13th pt. 6 Jason Lives.  I literally watched it through the crack of my brother’s door to his bedroom when I was very young.

What is your favorite Friday the 13th movie?
I’m going to have to say movies(s).  The Final Chapter and Jason X.  I just love how pissed off he is plus I dig the non-zombie more super human look/version.

What made you get into the art of cosplaying (how old were you? Where did you first show off your cosplay, do you design your own clothing, hood, hockey mask etc.?  If not, who do you use to help with your costume?)
My very first cosplay was a cardboard and duct tape predator 1 costume.  I was about 14 years old at the time. My very first costume was was a Ghostbuster costume for Halloween when I was 8 years old.

How many versions of Jason costumes do you have?  Do you have plans to showcase more costumes?
I have a Jason X and all the variations of part 4.

Do you attend conventions?  If so which ones do you attend?  Are there any you recommend for someone who has never attended?  What advice would you give to someone who has never attended a convention as a cosplayer?
I attended my first convention last year; ScareACon and it was a blast!  My advice is be well rested and well hydrated!  Be respectful of everything and everyone around you.

What advice would you give to a first time cosplayer?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help!  The community is large and the knowledge is there!

Who are some of your favorite cosplayers that you follow on social media or personally know?
My top 3 are: Joe Gallow of Gallow Goes to Hell on Facebook and 13_Gallow_Lane on Instagram.

Do you have any social media accounts for your cosplay that you would like to promote?
You can follow me on Instagram at NY HACK N SLASH
