Welcome to Crystal Lake

Confessions of a Cosplayer: Marissa Capaldi

Welcome to another installment of “Confessions of a Cosplayer”. Each week I will feature a cosplayer in the Friday franchise who I either know personally or through social media. As time moves on, I will also be focusing on other iconic horror characters from other franchises then I will have horror inspired cosplayers.
If you are a cosplayer or know someone who is a cosplayer and would like to be featured on a weekly spotlight please reach out to me on Facebook, Instagram or send me an email at SouthJerseyJason@gmail.com

This weeks spotlight I do not know personally but we do talk through social media. I was actually suppose to meet her and her boyfriend @steelcityjason the weekend of Friday the 13th at Monster Mania but as you all know, all conventions have been cancelled and rescheduled for a future date. I first took notice of Marissa about a year ago when I saw pictures of her as the victim in @killing_machine_cosplay93 playing his victim. Well in the past year, this victim has turned into a femme fatale. Last month during Valentines Day, she released some amazing photos of her and her boyfriend in a Freddy vs. Jason style photo shoot. She would release a couple of pictures at a time, each one wanting to see more. I am looking forward to meeting Marissa at a horror convention in the future. Enjoy!

What is your first memory of watching a Friday the 13th movie and A Nightmare on Elm Street?
I was around ten years old at my friends sleepover, and we rented a bunch of horror movies from blockbuster. We stayed up watching Halloween, Friday the 13th and a Nightmare on Elm Street all night, playing pranks, and scaring the shit out of each other.

What is your favorite Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street movie?
I’d say part 4 is my favorite Friday the 13th movie. Look wise, I really loved Jason’s look in part 7. I think it’s the most detailed. As for a nightmare on Elm street… nothing can beat the OG, the original. Freddy was actually dark and sinister, rather than funny like he was in the later movies.

What made you get into the art of cosplaying? (how old were you? Where did you first show off your cosplay, do you design your own clothing, if not who do you use to help with your costume(s)?
I knew cosplaying existed but never had the desire to try it until 2018, at age 27, when I discovered the horror community via Instagram. I then began my cosplay journey around early 2019, where I started showing off my cosplays in various horror photo shoots. I then gained the confidence to cosplay at Monster Mania convention around August 2019. Both of my Freddy and Velma costumes I actually bought online and added stuff to them to tweak the costume a bit and make it my own. I’m fairly new at cosplaying and still consider myself an amateur at it but I have lots of fun.

How many versions of Freddy do you have?  Do you have plans to showcase more styles?
So far, I only have one version of Freddy. The sweater dress and I pair it with fishnet stockings and boots. I switch up the makeup for the look all the time though, just because I like experimenting with different makeup and seeing how creative I can get with drawing cuts and scars all over my face.

Do you cosplay as any other characters from pop culture?
Aside from Freddy, I also cosplay Velma Dinkley from Scooby Doo. She’s lots of fun and I feel like I can pull her off well, especially since I actually wear glasses.

Do you attend conventions?  If so which ones do you attend?  Are there any you recommend for someone who has never attended?  What advice would you give to someone who has never attended a convention as a cosplayer?
So far the conventions I have attended have been Monster Mania in
Cherry Hill ,New Jersey and Steel City Con located in Pittsburgh. If you’re attending a convention for the first time, I’d say start out somewhere smaller and local so you’re not out of your comfort zone too much. If you love horror, attend a horror only convention like Monster Mania so you feel more at home with everyone around. Also, it always helps to bring a friend, family member or significant other along!

What advice would you give to a first time cosplayer?
My advice for a first time cosplayer would be to not stress yourself out over looking the “best” or getting the most “screen accurate” costume. Buy what you can afford and most importantly just have fun with it and enjoy doing what you love doing with other people who share this same hobby. Your first time cosplaying won’t be perfect but you will get better in time after some practice!

Who are some of your favorite cosplayers that you follow on social media or personally know?
I follow so many, so it’s difficult to name just some… everyone is so talented! Obviously, you are one of my many favorites. I really admire 13 Gallows Lane a lot. They’re an awesome group of cosplayers. xMy good friend Bobby Aimone as well (@killingmachinecosplay93), he was the first person I ever did a horror photo shoot with. And of course my boyfriend Scott (@steelcityjason), is beyond talented. He does 8 different Jason looks and his drive and passion to always improve his costumes never ceases to amaze me.

Do you have any social media accounts for your cosplay that you would like to promote?
The only social media account I have for cosplaying is my Instagram, @_itsriss. I may eventually make a Facebook account as well.
