Welcome to Crystal Lake

Confessions of a Cosplayer: Kyden Ritchie

Welcome to another installment of “Confessions of a Cosplayer”. Each week I will feature a cosplayer in the Friday franchise who I either know personally or through social media. As time moves on, I will also be focusing on other iconic horror characters from other franchises then I will have horror inspired cosplayers.
If you are a horror cosplayer or know someone who is a horror cosplayer and would like to be featured on a weekly spotlight please reach out to me on Facebook, Instagram or send me an email at SouthJerseyJason@gmail.com

What is your first memory of watching a Friday the 13th movie?
My first memory of watching a F13 movie was a few days before Halloween when I was about 8 and It was Friday the 13th part 2. Honestly I wasn’t that scared of the sackhead Jason at the time.

What is your favorite Friday the 13th movie?
Its gotta be part 6. That was the first Friday movie I watched all the way through. It doesn’t take itself too seriously but its still keeps the creepiness of other Friday films. Also it’s my favorite look for Jason.

What made you get into the art of cosplaying (how old were you? Where did you first show off your cosplay, do you design your own clothing, hood, hockey mask etc.? If not, who do you use to help with your costume?)
Well it all stemmed from my long time love of Halloween. I slowly put more time into my costumes until they weren’t for Halloween anymore. I was 13 at the time when I first started work on my part 6 and I first showed it off at MonsterPalooza. I do design all my clothing and my hockey masks. I do buy my hoods and weapons though. My Ghost Jason axe is from the talented @horrorfxdesigns and my ghost hood is from @anewkindoffear.

How many versions of Jason costumes do you have? Do you have plans to showcase more costumes?
I currently only have 2 that I show off. My ghost Jason and part 6. I fully intend to start working on a new one soon. I’m going between an NES 6 and a regular part 4.

Do you attend conventions? If so which ones do you attend? Are there any you recommend for someone who has never attended? What advice would you give to someone who has never attended a convention as a cosplayer?
I have only ever attended MonsterPalooza but I have a lot more planned for this year. Advice for people who have never attended as a cosplayer before would be to stay hydrated and have fun. I was amazed at how many people came up wanting pictures, even little kids and seeing that is what makes the blood sweat and tears of cosplaying worth it.

What advice would you give to a first time cosplayer?
Just have fun with it, and don’t be afraid to completely redo a piece of your costume. If it will make you happier in the long run with it go for it.

Who are some of your favorite cosplayers that you follow on social media or personally know?
@Travisjason13 is really what inspired me to do my part 6. He is a super nice guy who gave me advice before my first con. @Goregalor is another. I don’t see a lot of part 9’s but his is the best out there. If you like Roy, @factor13thstudios does an amazin job. I could list off everybody I love but that’d be a long list.

Do you have any social media accounts for your cosplay that you would like to promote?
My account is @kyden.props and that’s where I post all my masks I’ve made, cosplay pics and the occasional collection picture.
