Welcome to another installment of “Confessions of a Cosplayer”. Each week I will feature a cosplayer in the Friday franchise who I either know personally or through social media. As time moves on, I will also be focusing on other iconic horror characters from other franchises then I will have horror inspired cosplayers.
If you are a horror cosplayer or know someone who is a horror cosplayer and would like to be featured on a weekly spotlight please reach out to me on Facebook, Instagram or send me an email at SouthJerseyJason@gmail.com
In honor of Father’s Day on Sunday, I thought I would spotlight a father/daughter duo in the cosplay community. I first met Josh and Savannah this past December when their family came to Blairstown, NJ to celebrate the lighting of the Friday the 13th Christmas tree at The Friday the 13th Museum. I remember how cute Savannah was in the pictures we took together and there was one in which she was looking up at me in admiration. Some time after Christmas, the duo cosplayed at NJ Horror Con’s pop up market. This was the first time I saw Savannah in her Ghost Jason costume. She owned every photo, sorry Josh.
I would then see them again in Blairstown back in March for Friday the 13th, well it was Saturday the 14th. We took pictures in Hope, NJ at two filming locations- Moravian Cemetery and the front porch were we are first introduced to Crazy Ralph. We are planning to get together this summer to do another photoshoot.
What is your first memory of watching a Friday the 13th movie?
First memory that comes to mind was part 7 and 8. (Kane Hodder era) I was probably around 6 years old and remember how terrifying Jason looked in both of those films. Especially when he comes out of the lake in part 7. I really love the look of Jason in these films and always stuck with me as what Jason’s look is.
What is your favorite Friday the 13th movie?
My favorite is part 6. That movie had an awesome plot, had kids at the campground plus it has one of the best soundtracks.
You have a daughter (Savannah) who has recently started cosplaying with you. What made her want to watch Friday the 13th movies when other girls her age are probably more interested in Paw Patrol.
It all started when she was 2. I have a man cave and have a lot of horror collectibles, masks, figures, posters, etc. She was always fascinated with my Michael Myers masks and would always touch them and want to wear one. I saw how she wasn’t scared of them so I decided to let her watch the original Halloween with me. Well that was the first time I ever seen a movie hold her interest and how engaged she was with watching Michael on screen. This sparked her to love horror and she actually dressed up like Michael Myers for Halloween. I then started to introduce her to other horror movies and she just loves the monsters that play in them.
What was her first Friday the 13th movie that you let her watch? Has she asked to watch the other ones, if so what was your response to her?
Savannah’s first Friday film was Never Hike Alone. She loved that film and loves the look of Ghost Jason in that movie. We have watched all of the Friday films and she enjoyed them all and likes the first one because she likes to see Blairstown in the film. I really love to spend time with her and watch all the Friday the 13th’s. It’s our special bond we have with each other.
With Savannah being so young, what made her like scary movies? Do your other children share her enthusiasm?
I think what fascinates Savannah to horror movies is the look of the killers. How they wear mask’s and have different weapons. She really loves wearing masks. My other kids are not into horror at all. They like Stranger Things so that’s about the only time we all watch something we all like together.
What made you get into the art of cosplaying (how old were you? Where did you first show off your cosplay, do you design your own clothing, hood, hockey mask etc.? If not, who do you use to help with your costume?) Tell us how you came up with Savannah’s concept for her current costume.
I remember when I was young, I was always into horror and would love dressing up in all different costumes. I remember when me and my friends made a haunted house in my parents basement and charged .50 cents to all the local kids that wanted to come. We built a pretty cool little haunted attraction with the little we had. My first cosplay was Michael Myers and I cosplayed as the one from 2018 movie. I then got into wanting to do a Jason cosplay so I put together a part 6 costume that I weathered myself thanks to YouTube videos from sdcostumeguy. I then wanted to get a professional costume done so I came across @horrorfxdesigns, @j3costumes, @sculptordie and @anewkindoffear. Between all of them they have made me pieces to both my Ghost Jason and part 8 Jason cosplay. I did Savannah’s cosplay myself and was the first time I ever weathered a hockey mask. She loves Ghost Jason and wanted to dress like him.
How many versions of Jason costumes do you and Savannah have? Do you have plans to showcase more costumes?
I currently have 2 versions of Jason that I cosplay as; Ghost Jason and Part 8 Jason. I don’t have any plans as of now to do anymore but that can change. Savannah has one cosplay and that is Ghost Jason. She will have a new cosplay coming soon from Part 3.
Do you attend conventions? If so which ones do you attend? Are there any you recommend for someone who has never attended? What advice would you give to someone who has never attended a convention as a cosplayer?
Yes we attend a local convention they started doing here in Allentown, Pa called the Horror Sideshow Market and we attend Monster Mania in Cherry Hill, NJ. We really enjoy Monster Mania and would recommend anyone that loves horror to attend. The advice I would give to anyone wanting to cosplay is just have fun with it. It’s a blast to have fans of the franchise come up and want to take pictures with you and comment on how awesome your costume is.
I have seen pictures of the both of you at a convention. Tell me about that experience. It looked like Savannah stole the show.
We went to a local convention in Allentown, Pa called the Horror Sideshow Market which is a smaller convention not big like Monster Mania. We decided to both cosplay as Ghost Jason from Never Hike Alone. We had a blast and took so many pictures with people that it made us feel like celebrities. Savannah loved it! She was the talk of the show; everyone couldn’t believe that she was only 3 and a girl cosplaying as Jason. It was a great day and loved that me and her had that experience together. We both can’t wait to do more conventions in the future cosplaying as Jason.
Savannah, what is your favorite part of dressing up as Jason?
I like dressing up like Jason because he is the coolest person in the world!
Have you received any negative comments in regards to Savannah being so young and liking scary movies? At what age do you think you will introduce her to more types of horror movies?
I think it’s been nothing but positive reaction from friends and family. They think it’s nice that we share a bond together and that she is unique from other little girls her age. I really don’t have an age for her to watch different types of horror she already has seen mostly every horror I own.
Who are some of your favorite cosplayers that you follow on social media or personally know?
There are so many great cosplayers that I came across but too name a few I like @travisjason13, @midsouth_maniac, @13_gallows_lane, @southjerseyjason and @huskins_xiii.
Do you have any social media accounts for your cosplay that you would like to promote?
Yes you can follow me on IG at horrordaddy85 and Savannah at minijason13 also on Instagram.
